Creative and performing arts (CAPA)
In Creative Arts, students explore a wide range of artistic disciplines through the study of Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts. These experiences allow students to discover diverse art forms and develop creative thinking, self-expression, and collaboration skills.
Through the study of the Creative Arts, students learn to appreciate, compose, listen, make, and perform. Each art form has its own unique body of knowledge, skills, concepts, and expressive qualities, with the power to inspire, enrich, and connect individuals and communities.
All students are required to complete 100 hours of both Music and Visual Arts during Years 7–10. In addition, they have the opportunity to further develop their skills and interests through a range of elective subjects including Drama, Dance, Photography, and Visual Design. In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from a variety of HSC and VET courses tailored to their strengths and passions.
The VHS Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Department is proud to offer well-established facilities and a broad curriculum including Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, Photography and Digital Media, Ceramics, and Visual Design. Students also benefit from a variety of enrichment activities, such as Dance and Music ensembles, instrumental tuition, and performance opportunities.
Students are actively encouraged to participate in competitions, exhibitions, and performances both within the school and in the wider community. Each year, student achievement is celebrated at our annual Art Exhibitions and our major end-of-year performance night, Showcase. Performing Arts students also present their talents throughout the year at lunchtime concerts, formal assemblies, Wakakirri, and end-of-term performance nights.
