Telling the story through dance, about traditional lands given back to Wreck Bay Community

Wakakirri dance troup

Our Dance troupe are rehearsing for Wakakirri 2019, which will be held at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre on Monday 29 July 2019. This year they will be telling the story of the handing over of 403 hectares of traditional lands back to the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community. A significant moment in the Aboriginal history of our area.

At their rehearsal on Wednesday 12 June, traditional owners and descendants of the Wreck Bay Community who were part of this event, were invited to watch and give their input on the dance troupe’s interpretation of the hand over. Mr George Brown Junior, Naomi Brown and Bri McLeod Cosgrove gave extremely positive feedback to Miss Nolan and her dancers on their performance, which is in the early stages of production. They talked about the details of this event and encouraged the dancers to feel the emotion and let it show during the performance.

Ms Nolan rehearses with the dance troupe every Monday, she is delighted to be working closely with the community to tell this story through dance. Last year Vincentia High School won the Shoalhaven section and was nominated for story of the year. Tickets to the public will be available through the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre once the school allocation has been finalised. This will be a show not to miss!
