Once in a life time opportunity!

Aloe Blacc and 14 students

On Tuesday 26th February Vincentia High School hosted an Antipodeans fundraiser for students travelling to Cambodia in September. Year 10 student Justin Valdes just so happens to be the nephew of International recording, singer/songwriter, Grammy Award nominated artist Aloe Blacc! Aloe loves to support good causes and when he heard of what Justin and his fellow students were doing, he offered to donate his services and appear at the school to support the project. He is best known for platinum-selling single “The Man”, ‘I Need a Dollar’ and “Wake Me Up”- the massive hit he sang and co-wrote for Swedish DJ Avicii, which topped the charts in more than 100 countries.

For our Year 12 music ensemble, performing ‘I Need a Dollar’ on stage with Aloe Blacc, a world-class entertainer was a once in a life time opportunity! Aloe has an incredible voice and the most amazing ability to connect with the crowd and continuously engage with his audience, encouraging them to sing along and sharing words of wisdom during the Q&A session. We were treated to a very special moment with Aloe’s two young children joining him on stage to sing ‘I Count on Me’, which he wrote for the advertising of the movie ‘Green Book’ which has just won 3 Oscars at the Academy Awards including ‘Best Picture’.  Aloe’s wife Maya Jupiter, radio host and TV presenter, artivist, is also a talented singer/song writer and her sister Shiraz Martinez introduced her to the stage to sing one of her songs for us - “I am”.

The show was absolutely phenomenal, everyone left the hall feeling so uplifted and extremely grateful to have been involved in such a wonderful community event.

A huge thank you to Aloe Blacc, Farmer Grief (tour manager and pianist) and Maya Jupiter for taking time out of their Australia and New Zealand tour to support our students travelling to Cambodia with Antipodeans. An outstanding figure of $9500 was raised!

The Vincentia High School concert band, Year 12 music ensemble, Harmony Dyer and our Year 10 dance class wowed the crowd as the support acts. Mark and Jiah King from Didgeridoo Academy performed didgeridoo and did the welcome to country. Thank you to our food vendors; Dent Street, Cheeky Taco, Nomad Kitchen, The Bearded Brewer and V&C Foods for your generous donations. Thank you to all the members of our community who attended this inspirational event, we greatly appreciate your support.
